Had a text from the government telling you to click on a link to read about a cure for COVID-19? Or an email from the NHS telling you that you have been in contact with someone who has tested positive and that you have to click the attached link immediately?

If you get one don’t click on that link!

A new scam has been reported and unfortunately, hackers are using the publics’ COVID-19 fears and emotions to take advantage of you.
They are sending out emails or text messages claiming to be NHS or Government officials and trying to convince you to click on a link that allows the criminal access to your personal information on your device.
They can gain your information because the link will take you to a dodgy site that will infect whatever device you are using with a virus that allows them access.

But don’t worry, there are ways to be alert and protect yourself!

5 keywords will help you sort the real messages from the potential scam ones and protect your information from falling into the wrong hands. These are:

Authority – Is the message claiming to be from someone official or of high importance? Criminals often use important people or companies to try and trick you into doing what they want.

Urgency- Is there a time limit to respond? Criminals often use time limits to scare you into responding quickly and therefore not carefully.

Emotion – Does the message make you feel scared or curious? Threatening or intriguing language is often used by criminals to convince you of what to do.

Scarcity – Is the message offering you something hard to get? Criminals play on people’s fear of missing out.

Current events – Is it related to COVID-19? if so be wary about it.
