Do you keep running out of space on your phone? Here is a quick and easy guide on how to clear your storage.

How do I check if my storage is full?

There are several reasons why your device may tell you the storage is full. Here is how you can find out if you need to manage your storage:

For iPhone users

  • Go to Settings > General > iPhone storage
  • At the top it will give you a colour-coded bar, showing how much space you have left and how much it is already being used. You may notice the biggest ones are Photos and Apps.
  • Below this, it will show you which apps you have, sorted by how much storage they take.

For Android users

  • Go to Settings > About Phone > Storage or Settings > Apps
  • You will see a percentage colour-coded bar, showing you how much storage you have used and what is free.
  • Below this, it will show you which apps you have, sorted by how much storage they take.

How to clear storage on your iPhone?

Now that you know how to check it, how do you fix it? Here is a list on how to clear your storage on your iPhone:

  • Clear up your photo gallery: Delete any photos you have saved elsewhere, such as your computer or Google Drive
  • Clear your browser cache: Simply go to the browser you use the most, such as Safari or Google Chrome, and clear history and browser data.
  • Clear app cache and other data: This can be done by going to Settings > General > iPhone Storage, and selecting the apps on top of the list, delete them and reinstall them. This will clear app cache and other data you do not need anymore. Before doing this, make sure important details such as username and passwords are saved somewhere, to log back in.

How to clear storage on your Android phone?

If you have an Android instead of an iPhone, the process is more or less the same. Here is a list to clear your storage on your Android phone:

  • Clear cache and data: This can be done by going to Settings > Apps > Select an app from the list and choose “Clear Data” or “Clear Cache”. This step may vary if you have an Android 12 or less.
  • Remove apps you do not need: Choose any app you rarely use or can go without, and click “Uninstall” by long-pressing the app or going to Settings > Apps > Selecting the app and clicking “Delete app”
  • Delete downloads you don’t need: Go to the Downloads folder and delete anything you no longer need, such as a file you downloaded months ago or something you have backed up somewhere else.
